Winterizing Your ATV, UTV or Golf Cart: A Canadian Checklist
Canadian winters are hard on engines, batteries and fuel systems. Whether you ride through the snow or store your machine until spring, a little preparation prevents expensive repairs.
If you’re storing it
- Stabilize the fuel: add fuel stabilizer, then run the engine for 5โ10 minutes so treated fuel reaches the carburetor or injectors.
- Change the oil and filter: old oil contains acids that can damage engine internals during storage.
- Look after the battery: remove it or connect a smart maintainer. For electric golf carts, follow the manufacturer’s storage charge instructions.
- Check antifreeze on liquid-cooled engines.
- Inflate tires to the recommended pressure and lift the machine if possible.
- Clean and cover it, and block openings to keep rodents out.
If you’re riding all winter
- Use the correct winter-grade oil.
- Inspect belts, brakes and lights.
- Consider tire chains, a plow kit, hand warmers and a cab enclosure.
- Warm up the engine before working it hard.
