How to Choose the Right UTV for Work or Play in Canada

A UTV (utility task vehicle), also called a side-by-side, is one of the most versatile machines you can own. The right one depends on how you plan to use it, where you ride, and Canadian conditions like snow, mud and long winters.

1. Decide: work, recreation or both

Utility models prioritize cargo bed capacity, towing and low-speed torque. They are ideal for farms, acreages, job sites and cottages. Sport models offer longer-travel suspension and more power for trails. Crossover models split the difference.

2. Count your passengers

Two-seat UTVs are nimble and fit narrower trails. Four- and six-seat models carry crews or families but need more room to turn and store.

3. Engine size and drivetrain

Engines from 400cc to 1000cc+ are common. For hauling and hills, choose more displacement and a selectable 4×4 with a locking differential. Electric UTVs are quiet and low-maintenance for campuses and indoor use.

4. Plan for Canadian winters

Consider a full cab with heater, a plow mount, winch and good tires. Climate-controlled cabs make a UTV usable year-round.

5. Think about parts and service

Buy from a dealer that stocks parts and offers service, so a breakdown doesn’t park your machine for weeks.
